MARKA HERBERT is a 38-year veteran teacher who has been at Dawson ISD for 6 years and currently teaches 2nd grade.  She was born in Muleshoe, TX but was raised in Portales, NM where she went to school and college.  She graduated from ENMU with a Bachelor of Science and Secondary Education degree, and then went back to school later at WTAMU to get her elementary education degree and kindergarten endorsement.

Marka comes from a family of educators, and education is very important to her family.  Her father had his doctorate degree and taught at ENMU before finishing his career as an elementary principal in Highland Park in Dallas.  Her stepmom was also a principal, and her sister was an English teacher before becoming a lawyer.  She has taught at Bovina, Dimmitt, and Friona before moving to Lubbock and accepting a teaching position at Dawson.  She started her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher for 12 years before moving to a 1st grade position for 20 years.  She retired from the Friona school system after her 32nd year of teaching.

Marka and her husband moved to Lubbock to be closer to their daughter, a nurse practitioner in Lubbock, their son-in-law who is a CRNA in Lubbock, their grandchildren, and their other daughter who lives in Austin.  She worked in the floral department at Market Street for two years before deciding to go back into teaching at Dawson, starting as the PreK/K teacher and then moving to 2nd grade.

Marka loves teaching 2nd graders because she can expand on their skills and work on helping them become better readers to comprehend what they read.  Reading is the key ingredient for students to be able to do better in math, science, social studies, and all their other subjects.  She is very excited about having such a small class this year because she can work individually more with her students.

Marka is a beach lover!  Her family owns a condo on South Padre and she loves spending at least one week there every summer.  She also loves to decorate for weddings, birthdays, and parties – her husband doesn’t like that she has a shed full of decorations!!!

Dawson ISD is so lucky that the multi-talented Marka Herbert came out of retirement to teach so many of its students!!!!!!!!
